    Moscow Philharmonic Society begins live broadcasts of concerts without an audience from the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. The initiative was supported by leading Russian musicians, several collectives, musicologists and hosts of classical music concerts Artyom Vargaftik and Yaroslav Timofeev.

    The broadcast program keeps being compiled. In addition to the concerts already indicated in the schedule, performances of the Chamber Orchestra of Russia, pianists Boris Berezovsky, Nikolai Lugansky, Dmitry Masleev, Philipp Kopachevsky, Alexey Melnikov, violinist Pavel Milyukov, guitarist Artyom Dervoed are planned.

    The live broadcasts start at 19.00. Then the recording will be available in our video catalogue. All concerts will be held in one part.

    Dmitry Masleev

    “A discovery and a brilliant pianist”, is the way Boris Berezovsky describes his protégé and regular chamber music partner Dmitry Masleev, who took the international spotlight four years ago as the celebrated winner of the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow.

    Since then, Germany and France have become particularly important destinations for Mr. Masleev, in addition to Russia, where he collaborates with all the top orchestras and each of his recitals turns into a sold-out triumph of the piano. He has been presented multiple times by Philharmonie am Gasteig in Munich and Philharmonie de Paris. This season, he will give a long-awaited solo recital on the main stage of Cité de la Musique.

    Mr. Masleev made his Paris recital debut at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. It was among many of his performances broadcasted on Medici TV to thousands of people worldwide. He has also been featured by Klavierfestival Ruhr as well as La Roque d’Anthéron, Rheingau, and Bad Kissingen festivals.

    Mr. Masleev’s Berlin debut with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and Robert Trevino, playing Rachmaninov’s Variations on the Theme of Paganini was nearly sold out. He has toured internationally with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (Mikko Franck), Orchestre National de Lyon (Tan Dun), Bamberg Orchestra (Christoph Eschenbach), and Orquestra Cadaqués (David Robertson).

    The 2018-19 season opened with recitals at the Lucerne and Montreux festivals and closed with the Verbier Festival debut: Dmitry Masleev gave a recital and played chamber music with Marc Bouchkov (both concerts are available on Medici TV). He also made his Vienna debut, playing the Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 with Vienna Chamber Orchestra and Joji Hattori. The orchestra immediately invited him to return to the Vienna Konzerthaus for a performance of Beethoven Third Concerto in the coming season. Maestro Hattori has also invited Mr. Masleev to perform with his orchestra in Spain.

    Other important highlights of the 2019-20 season include an Italian tour with Orchestra della Toscana and an appearance at one of René Martin’s festivals in France alongside Daniil Trifonov, Grigory Sokolov, Nikolai Lugansky and other Tchaikovsky Competition winners. In Asia, he will give a recital at the Seoul Arts Center, play with New Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo and tour China in continuation of his collaboration with Maestro Tan Dun.

    Dmitry Masleev’s new album, recorded with Siberian State Symphony, will be released worldwide in December 2019 on Russia’s legendary label Melodia, famous for its recordings of Richter, Gilels, Davidovich and other great Russian pianists. It will feature Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 alongside the Jazz Suite by Alexander Tsfasman and the Piano Concerto No. 2 but a living Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin (Dmitry’s performance of Kapustin’s Toccatina has over 300,000 views on YouTube).

    Shostakovich and Tsfasman enjoyed an artistic friendship: Tsfasman consulted with Shostakovich on the orchestration of his themes, while Shostakovich sought his opinion on his own forays into jazz.

    Mr. Masleev’s previous album, launched with a performance at the recital hall of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and featuring solo and orchestral repertoire, has made the Spotify Top Classical 2017 charts and received the prestigious German Critics’ Prize (Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik) in the solo piano category, where it was nominated alongside Krystian Zimerman’s Schubert album (DG). “One can only revel in the poetic spontaneity of this Scarlatti recording, not least because of the brilliance, precision and ease of Masleev's playing [...] The recording manifests what Prokofiev himself defined as his main principles: clarity in the expression of ideas, concision, avoidance of anything superfluous in the interpretation. On his debut CD, Masleev establishes a physically perceptible connection between Scarlatti and Prokofiev over the centuries” (Westdeutsche Rundfunk). Within the first six months of the release, Mr. Masleev’s own arrangement of Shostakovich’s Elegy from the Ballet Suite No. 3 has been downloaded on iTunes over 43,000 times. In acknowledgement of these achievements, ARTE’s primetime TV show Stars von Morgen, hosted by Rolando Villazon, featured Dmitry Masleev as the pianist to watch.

    Dmitry Masleev’s 30th birthday was celebrated with an Artistic Residence at the Bodensee Festival, encompassing a dozen performances with SWR Stuttgart Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach, Ural Philharmonic and Dmitry Liss, solo recitals, chamber music with the Borodin Quartet and his teacher Mikhail Petukhov. “From the simple opening melody to the spectacular finale, the pianist coaxed the “Russian soul” of the [Rachmaninov Third Piano] Concerto out of the instrument. The more energy- intensive and clear was his playing, the more serene he seemed… in wonderful harmony with the voluminous body of the orchestra” (Volksblatt Lichtenstein).

    North America fell in love with Dmitry Masleev when he made his Carnegie Hall recital debut at the Isaac Stern Auditorium in January 2017 and repeated the same program at Toronto’s Koerner Hall in March. In 2018, he toured coast-to-coast with the Moscow State Symphony and Pavel Kogan.

    Born and raised in Ulan-Ude (a Siberian town between Lake Baikal and the Mongolian border), Masleev was educated at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of Professor Mikhail Petukhov, and at the International Music Academy at Lake Como.

    Artyom Vargaftik

    Radio and TV journalist, music critic, observer at the "Radio of Russia". Born in Moscow in 1971, Mr. Vargaftik is a professional musician — he graduated the Conservatoire College and the Gnessins' Academy of music as a cellist, profiled in Performing Arts History at the Conservatoire post-graduate course.

    Twice - in 2003 and 2004 — his projects were awarded by the National TV Academy prize — TEFI.

    As a concert presenter and music lecturer Mr. Vargaftik is touch with leading Philharmonic societies of Russia: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Novosibirsk and many others.
