The Goeyvaerts String Trio was founded in 1997 by violinist Kristien Roels, violist Kris Matthynssens and cellist Pieter Stas with the aim of performing twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire. The trio takes its name from the Belgian composer Karel Goeyvaerts, who played an important role in the development of new music in Europe. Besides playing existing works, the ensemble is active in commissioning new string trios.
The first CD by the Goeyvaerts String Trio appeared on the Pavane label, featuring works by Joseph Jongen, Eugène Ysaÿe and Louis De Meester. This CD was awarded a Joker by Crescendo magazine, while Japan's Record Geijutsu called it a performance "full of delicacy and passion". In its performances the trio aims for authenticity, seeking out the advice of such eminent musicians as Alexander Ivashkin, Giya Kancheli, Henk Guittart, Sofia Gubaidulina and Alexander Knaifel. Their most recent CD of string trios by Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Alfred Schnittke, on the renowned Challenge Records label, has received the highest rating from a number of magazines, including a special recommendation in Gramophone, and was accorded a Golden Label from the Klassiek Centraal website and a nomination for best CD production of the year by the Flemish classical broadcaster (KLARA).
